NiGHTS into Dreams...

How odd. I seem to have picked up a SEGA Saturn game for my PS2...

I only ever played this on the demo machines at Target, but I always thought it looked cool. I had no clue what the game was about, though.

Now that I actually have a manual (that I can sort of read...) and a chance to play for longer than two minutes at a time...well, it looks even cooler, and the story is interesting so far. I'm not very good at it yet, but it's still fun.

Sega even included a Saturn graphics mode, for the full retro nostalgia effect. Off to play some more!

An Example of a Japanese Variety Show

In relation to that last "Here's to fail" pic, here's a video of things you can do with a camera that shoots 1 million frames a second.

P.S. to Smaug: You should recognize one of the hosts...

Back when you least expect it!

Holy cow, it's a Photo Album Update!

Oh by the way

I forgot to mention that I received the results of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test last week.

How did I do? Well....

(By the way, if you ever find yourself searching for one of these "FAIL" image macros, be careful. I found one which used a photo from the "Running of the Bulls" that I'd describe for you were it not for the fact that I don't wanna think about it anymore.

I swear I am not making this up

So NHK news is talking about how Japan is preparing for the upcoming G8 summit meeting in the town of Tōyako, Hokkaidō. Tokyo is going to send their riot police to Tōyako while the summit is in session. This reminds me of the preparations for the World Cup way back when...

Also, the local police will concentrate their forces around the meeting area, resulting in a reduced police presence in the rest of the town. The local officials are asking residents with dogs to patrol their own neighborhoods when they can. NHK showed footage of citizens and their impromptu dog patrols.

CHIHUAHUA patrols.

*inside joke.

Apropos of nothing #5: Airplane anecdote

I first came to Japan at the end of July, 2001. After our first JET Programme orientation in Chicago, we took off on an ANA jet out of O'Hare.

Also on this ANA flight was some church group out of Milwaukee. Most of them were teens, and they were wearing matching group t-shirts proudly emblazoned with a hand-drawn logo. "Manitou-something-or-other." (Manitou is probably the most over-used Native American word in non-Native-American context.) Anyway, I couldn't describe the group as a whole, but the two guys in the same row as us spent the first hour or so of the flight snarking about the JET Programme and us "losers in suits" who were in it. "Oh, I wanna be a JET toooooo..." was about the wittiest comment they made, but they were still being really annoying.

Finally the guy next to me turned to them and said, politely,

"So, you guys are from Wisconsin, right?"

"Uh, hey, yeah! We --"

"Fuckin' cheeseheads." And with that, he dropped the pretense of wanting to talk to them and turned back to continue our conversation.

This one still makes me laugh even now.
